Sam Burriola,

you bet I remember you. You and I came out of nam together after I had spent over two years there. You were in the first platoon 919th, 11th Armored Cav with me. I was the TC for 1/1. I have always wonder what happen to you after your sister came to my parents house and picked you up. Remember we swam in my parents pool with a drink in our hands toasting our return. I hope you are doing well. The NAM never leaves us does it. To explain my life in a e-mail would take numerous pages so I'll wait to talk to you. I live in northern California in the foot hills. I am glad you are still kicking. Talk to you soon I hope.

Your brother in arms, Ford Canutt

Fred Sheetz,

Ran across your Bronze with "V" Citation on the 11th ACR site. Your actions reminded me of an action I witnessed (could it have been you?) and will always remember it. If you read this or if someone knows Fred, contact me. Just wondering.

Why don't some of you RED DEVILS send in some more pictures? I know there are numerous troopers out there that have pictures from 67 to 71 to share. I would really like to see pictures from the first platoon. I was a TC from June 68 to August of 70 and I saw Troopers take some great pictures. Please Share. Thanks

It was givin to me when I shipped back to the states and I think you were the one that gave it to me, I was in the 4th platoon, we built most of the barracks and tank repair shops.
I came back to 919th after a stay with the "LRRP's", I think it was in Nov. 68 untill March 69.

Comments: Lane,

Gary Webb had instituted an index card system where he had the individual fill it in, as they arrived at the 919th, where they filled out their proper name and good mailing address.

I don't recall if you said it had been sent to your new duty station or home, but it was a good system.

Except in one KIA case where, well, it was a heartbreaking exercize in bureaucratic bungling.

Thanks for the email and pictures, it only had your first name and I think I'm starting to remember bits and pieces of asking, who is Lane?

Joe

Comments: The Great Zippo Mystery!!-Joe, I sent pics via your email. As I mentioned, not sure what to say!?!? I know I left country in Oct ’68 and I know the “new company clerk”, or at least that was his story, said he had found the lighter in his desk drawer. As I said in the post, he also said he had tracked me down via old personal files. And I know that the lighter is on my shelf!!!!

Any thoughts on “The Rest of the Story”?

Comments: In response to my posting of 09/30/2008, this posting was to start off “Joe Rooney”. Additionally, I am not sure where the email address hanky5642@yahoo.com came from, as my address is turtlecove@mctv.com.

And once again – Thanks Joe!!!!!

Comments: Now I am really corn-fused.  I don't remember sending a lighter, it would have been out of character, I probably would have saved it to sell on eBay decades later.  Maybe Gary L. Webb forged my signature, he was good at it.

But, I see from the email addresses that Dewayne and George (Lane) are the same person.

I need a Pabst,

Joe

Comments: I left the 919th in October of ’68, so we never got to meet. Our connection; however, is distant at best, but still very meaningful.

Roger (Crute), you will remember that the night before I shipped out we had the traditional going-away-drunk in the club we had put together across from the orderly room (I still can’t believe we got away with trading two old .50 cals. to the USAF for coolers!). Like most of us, I had a Zippo that had been engraved  - “Blackhorse Viet Nam” with the map on one side and “Texas” followed by “11th ACR 67-68” and then my name “Lane” on the other. Well, during the evenings festivities, my lighter came up missing and I moved on without it. Lost, but never forgotten.

Then about six or so months later, I find myself at Ft. Knox, when one day I receive a package in the mail. In it I find my lighter and a short note from someone who says he is the new company clerk at the 919th, and that in his desk he finds the Zippo. He goes on to say that in going through the old rosters from ’67-’68, the only one he finds with a matching name was mine. He then tracks me down through magic known only to company clerks, and Voila! My lighter and I are back together.

Joe, I still have it, and as a matter of fact, used it for many years until I gave up the smokes. It now sits proudly in our master bedroom on a shelf that is shared by a picture of my lovely wife – Libby. All I can is once again, “Thanks Joe”!!

In old web site message you mentioned that son of Charles Huffine was continuing dad's work on history of 919th in Vietnam. I commanded 2d Squadron 23 June 71 - stand-down March 1972. Am working on historical manuscript and slide show for that period, and would like to talk to Huffine's son if you have his contact information.

Information on our 919th detachment is interwoven with discussions of operations, but I will page or so dedicated to 919th.

Comments: Tomorrow, April 8, is the 38th anniversary of the day Craig Van Aiken, Robert Thompson (Sugar Bear), and David Dash were fatally wounded in an automatic ambush at the Cambodian border and Rico Spears, Dorsey Jones, and Sylvester Holmes were wounded (I've been told Rico died from cancer several years ago). For those of you who knew them as I did, they were some wonderful fellows and incredible soldiers in a unique outfit the likes of which will never be seen again. During the time period in which they gave the ultimate sacrifice, the 919th earned over a dozen Purple Hearts and had three KIA's of the 26 total KIA's suffered during the time the 919th was in country. Please join with tomorrow in spending a few moments reflecting on the memories of these terrific people that have made the journey to Fiddler's Green.

Fred Sheetz, me, maybe Connie Wayne Padgett, Sam Caldwell, Ken Wood and a few others are making the Blackhorse reunion in Vegas in May.

We are staying at Fitzgeralds the 13th through the 19th and have a few days to party hardy.

Drop by if you are in the area.  The actual reunion is at Southpoint and it starts 15 May I think.  I've signed up for the Ft Irwin trip with the others, but I'm the only one golfing.

Creech (a.k.a. bullit, shake and bake) know that you were good to me when I arrived   in Quon Loi. After serving six months with the 919th, I was transferred to the 37th Med.      It is good to see a differant messenger on this site! Didn't you used to be our medic, nicknamed "Butcher" ? As I remember it, the nickname had nothing to do with your skill level, just your MOS. I wonder if you remember the big mess we all got into on our way to"jake" one day. April 2nd and 3rd, 1970? I thought your track hit a mine. I know we [E-23] did later that evening. Our driver was "jellybelly"
Tom Littrell. We were on the command track with Livingood.
Glad to see that you are still above ground.

Comments: I wish to seek out anyone who was apart of 58th C.E.C. (Black Horse) from Fulda, Germany.  My tour was from November 1971 to November 1976.  I served with a bunch of swell guys, so much so that I would like to share our times in person wherever you are.  It was very important to serve at that point in my life. I feel that is why I'm currently working for the V.A. as a Voc. Rehab. Spec.  Trying to give back what freely given to me.  A had some good times and beautiful memories, especially the time my father came to visit and and spoke with Captain Arnell in such a way that I was given time off just to be with my father after just coming back off leave.  I could really go on and on but will stop here.

Comments: Is anyone out there who was in the 919th during 1971 and 1972 ? I was in the 919th from July 1971 until standown in March 1972. All my time was spent in the field, I never pulled any rear duty until two weeks before standown. Maybe someone remembers me , I ran over a landmine while driving an ACAV on mine sweep duty one day in January 1972. I drove an ACAV on the run to the Cambodia border. I have a lot of pictures of me and others if any one is interested.

Comments: Marvin,
I no longer have that address. I did google the White Pages and looked up the Graff name . There are 67 of them . The one that correspondes to Dons name[ his parents I believe ]is unlisted. Actually a lot of them are. I called at least  15 of them . Either machines or never heard of him.I looked up the relative who had written the post to our web site. His name is Tom McElligott. His number, too, is unlisted.I even went back through our web site to see if I could get his E-mail address[ which he stopped responding to] I could not find it, but may have been too fast. It is between a year or two ago if you want to check. I do have the address currently used for that listing. It is : Tom McElligott,730 W. Randolph St. ,Chicago, Il 60661-2100. Good luck. I know his mother refuses to have anything to do with the whole matter, and I suspect his siblings may feel the same way too. After all ,none of them have ever appeared on our site looking for info, only his ex brother-in-law. I figure they want to be left with their existing memories. So,if you proceed, be aware that you may be stepping on somebodies tail by doing so.We may miss Don, but they have no reason to miss us.

Comments: Doug, do you still have the address where you mailed your story and Don's picture to? If I had that, I might be able to find some of his family. It would be great if we could get some of them to visit us at the next reunion of the 11th Cav in Chicago this year. I have recently been emailing Craig Van Aiken's great nephew who is on active duty at Ft. Stewart and hope that I might get him to visit with us too.

Comments: Well fellows , the mystery behind the Quan Loi pic has been cleared up. My post about it was made before Marvins. Glad to share what I know about Don Graff.I had called his mothers house back in 1979. I was hoping to get any insights that he might have on PTSD issues, since the concept was coming into vogue then, and I always felt he was pretty steady. She told me that he had commited suicide in 1975 on October 30 th by turning on the stove gas and allowing the unlit fumes kill him. She told me that non of his siblings knew that fact and that she did not want them to know and would never speak to me again. I respected her wishes. The only reason I say anything now is due to the post you refer to that a relative made. The truth had come out and he [Dons' ex-brother-in-law] wanted to  get any details about Don so that Dons' neices and nephews could get some knowledge of him. I wrote a lengthy story about Don, included a copy of the only picture I had of him. I mailed it to him and never heard anything back. I have never been able to get a reply and there is no Graff in the Chicago phonebook that I can find. I do not know if I offended them in some way; but I swear I used no profanity, told no lies and will always wonder just what happened  with that incident. So it goes.

Comments: Joe, I'm glad you, too , think that the picture is the same. I think it was taken from the shower tower, like Roger suggests .I don't think your remark about people trading pictures would apply in this case. Why would people trade each other the identical picture? Isn't that like trading a Hank Aaron for an identical Hank Aaron picture? Be that as it may, I bet the other picture you refer to is a dandy. I was not at that base camp, but the setting and the flavor of that photo sure must be a universal representation of the general nuttiness you refer to! Is that pic in your photos on our picture site?

Comments: You folks are all right about the picture being the same. The story behind it is that I got a camera from the Px in Quan Loi in March 1970 on a rare trip from the field and took a few pictures in the camp area. I vaguely recall climbing up on something (maybe a tower) to take the shot. I apparently gave the second copy to Steve Hughes (Zigzag) who later gave them to Rick Langley who posted them. There is also a duplicate of the demolition of some NVA munitions captured after a firefight at FSB Kramer in the middle of April. Speaking of Don Graff, he was a good friend of mine who always stayed with Jack Sexton and I when he came to the field on an occasional mission. He was helping us build a temporary bunker(a rare event for the third platoon as we moved every day or so as a rule)as we have been told that we were going to be there for a while. Yeah, right! We were back in Quan Loi a few days later as we were down to one track and one NCO. I recently found out that Don had died in 1975 and wandered if any of you could provide me with any information as to where, how, etc. I saw a posting by his nephews and nieces in the guest book a few years ago looking for anyone who knew him. I emailed the address but got no reply. I sure would like to contact them to share the pictures and maybe some stories and information with them. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks.

Comments: Hi Doug and Roger,

The picture is the same, I'll bet folks traded pictures.  I have a picture of the First Platoon in Blackhorse, Xuan Loc with Ravin, the Platoon Sergeant leaning up against a bunker while a spiffy 1LT Green appears to be barking orders to the towel draped, disinterested, and sleepy soldiers.
I don't recall taking it, but it is one of my favorites because it captures all the nuttiness.
Have a healthy and prospereous 2008.

Comments: Roger,
It has been a long time since I was in Quan Loi,  the shower tower makes pretty good sense. I remember one of the "smoking" spots involved following a pretty nutty guy through this elaborate booby trapped spot he had back behind the mess tent or motor pool area. You had to be pretty ripped just to agree to let him lead you. I think he is the same guy some fellows caught with the company dog, Mida, doing something unnatural with her. The other spot I recall was a bunker that Don Graff had in pretty much the same area you mention. Maybe the same one. I remember he had a built-in cooler and reclined sand bag seats and plenty of supplies in that place.Seems to me that place is where I got bronchitis after Don and I made a carton of ready-rolled shrink to two packs one night in 1970. Yes, those were the days! Happy New Years everyone. Too bad my smoking days are over, but I'm pretty sure I've had my share! Peace, Doug Giesige Echo-23 69-70

Comments: It is always good to see more pictures on the photo page. I have a question about Marvin Gootees' photo of our area at Quan Loi. Is it just me, or is that not the identical pic that Rick Langley has also posted? What I'm the most curious about is how was the picture taken, since I cannot remember anything in that area that was high enough to account for the angle of view. Was there a "smoking" spot back there that I was not aware of? Just curious. Also, it is a bittersweet thing to see pictures of Don Graff. I have one of him that shows the very same level of dirt and grease shown in those two. It is how I always envision him.  Since he died on my birthday in 1975, I think of him every year on that day.I liked him and miss him, too bad about his death. Well, so much for bummer stuff. Hope you all have a good New Year.

Sgt Pearl was the First Platoon.  He was very knowledgeable about the personnel he worked with, his stories and recollections always portrayed his men in the most positive light.

Comments: Hi Red Devils,

Wanted to let you know the next location of the 919th reunion (2009) will be June in Tulsa.  Specifically, Jenks and Gary Sharp will help with the organization.

Paul Repsher needs a lot of help to keep the 919th Association going and Anne Wright is looking for volunteers to help as he offloads some of his duties.

This was a fun reunion, regretfully, there are a lot of family illnesses and other things that kept some away or only briefly attending at all.  We are getting older, just look at the diminished amount of Korean War Vets that made this one.

Some ideas folks have been kicking around are holding a 919th reunion in Vegas in the off year, or moving the 919th reunion to a week before or after the 11thACVVC in the off year and see if we can snag some of the good hotel deals that Steve Paige seems to find.

Wee really missed you guys that couldn't make it, but we will get together one of these days.

Hope to see all of you in September in Louisville.

While thumbing through books at my local hobby shop, I spotted where some fellow had reworked a Tamiya M60 into the Combat Engineer Vehicle (CEV) M728.  I remember talking with Rick O'Dell about a guy doing just that.  I didn't buy the book, but it was something to do with plastic custom models and it was $15.95.

Check your local hobby shop, maybe they have it.  But the skills to do it are way beyond mine.

This is off the RootsWeb.com Social Security Death Index:

HERMAN NOOTRE  13 May 1922 21 Dec 2004 (V) 09265 (PE) (none specified) 215-38-7682 Maryland

Our XO Tom Adams (at that time) inquired about Nootre and Willie Brown.  I don't have anything on Sgt Willie Brown, he was wounded late 1969.  Can you help?  Wounded Vietnam Veterans are the most difficult to find.

Thanks,

Joe

Comments: Hi Red Devils,

I've emailed most of you about SSGT George Cannon's younger brother Sam requesting pictures of him that he could share with SSGT Cannon's kid (son, I think), probably a grown man.

Sam doesn't have email or internet and needs hard copies.  I can furnish his address in Pinetop, NC and phone numbers on request.

Hope your 2007 is going great.

Thanks, Joe

Comments: I hope everybody made it through the holiday season o.k. It has been good to see all the E-mail traffic on this site lately. I'm glad we all made it and are still here to yak about it. I have a few questions that I hope some of you might be able to answer. Does anyone have any idea about how many men actually served with the 919th? It is kind of hard to tell since a lot of guys served multiple tours [Shutie, Owens, etc.] and I only have a couple of months of demo and hazardous duty orders to go by. Also, does anyone know what happened to Victor Montez ? I owe him for a steam bath experience! Also, does anyone remember the guy who had a wound to the side of his head, going along the top of his cheek or temple that apparently was due to a round creasing his head ? I hope that he feels lucky, cause he sure was when it came to that incident. Well, that is enough questions. It was good to talk to Tom Littrell the other night. He had talked to some others from our platoon and felt they were doing good. Some people apparently had trouble placing me. I came in November 69, after completing a tour around Lai Khe with the 168th as a demo man. I left in June 1970 I was a little freakier in those days, I "floated" around on the sweep team with Adkins and Owens and had a peace sign and a big F.T.A. painted on my 60's gun shield when we pulled out of Quan Loi for that legendary road march we of the second platoon were on the day or so before the Cambodian invasion. Fortunately I was short and had jungle rot so bad I was sent to Zion on permanent profile and was spared that incursion. Those were the days. Peace, Doug [Alphie] Giesige

We don't have any close up portrait pictures of SSGT Strahin in the gallery.  I need something with his likeness for a project I'm working on.  Post them with Pete Echon here, or send them to me.

Do it now!

Gene Young and SP4 Tim Holt.  Would like to communicate with anyone else who knew Buford Spencer who was KIA on 6/21/70 in Cambodia.  I recently spoke to his sister and nephew on the phone. He was like a big brother to me when I first met him at Quan Loi in 5/70.  Also would like to talk to anyone who was with our platoon on 2/3/71 at fire support base Bandit 2/11 when we were ambushed at sunset and lost Terry Weldon and five of us were dusted off including myself.

Comments: Mr. Whited,
I tried to send you a note at the listed e-mail, but it did not work. I have a couple of pictures of your uncle on the 919th photo page. He is in the second and third pictures on the third row. Sorry that they are only back and partial ones, if I have any others I'll get them to you. I did not know him very well since he was on another track and came towards the end of my tour. I remember he had earned a Bronze Star in his previous unit that had left early. It was for being a top-notch tool-room keeper and he was very proud of it. He had a guitar and did not play too bad. I remember that he was a quiet, but nice guy. I thought he was  maybe a little too nice for what we were doing, but I guess he was still optimistic and we were not. I heard from guys who were there that he stood up on a track and caught a round in the head from friendly fire. A real fluke, if that is so. Hopefully you will hear from some who will know more. No matter how ,his death was still a loss that I wish your family had been spared, especially since he was devoted to and spoke ofte of his family. If I think of anything else I will let you know. Just remember, He had put himself in harms way and did not shirk his duty. The pictures he is in were taken on April 3,1970 after a very rough 24 hour period in which we lost 7 tracks.[ A.P.C.'s and C.E.V.'s] As a matter of fact ,he may have been on the first track of the day to hit a mine. Hope this helps fill some gaps.
     Peace, Doug Giesige [68-71]

Comments: I believe I remember you Mr. Creech. I was on the Echo Two Three track and was the left gunner behind Tom Littrell. My memory can be a little vague too; how ever ,I do recall finding an old French mine in the road and getting into an "honest argument" about the advisability of digging it up. As I recall the discussion involved wither or not it was a good idea to retrieve it for the war museum . Don't know how that "Willy Pete "  round got out of my M-79, but as I remember that particular mine did not make it to the museum. Oops! Glad you made it home, though. Hey Tom Littrell , I'm really glad you made it home too! Say hey to Charlotte. Peace.

Comments: Red Devils,

I posted this on the main 11thCavNam page, but figured out that you folks may have missed it.  Paul Repsher told me about his passing when he called his wife after not hearing from him for a while.

"Charles M Huffine, 1st Platoon, 919th Engr Co(Armd), 1966-67, also serving as XO, died 24Oct2006 after a short bout with cancer. 1lt Huffine was writing a book about the 919th History in Vietnam, his son Richard will continue that task.

I met him at the 919th reunion last year in West Virginia and found him to be the most knowledgeable person about the Red Devil presence in Vietnam."

I can't ask you to give us a call after you die or pass on, but let your neighbors and next of kin know that the 919th Engineering Company members from all the wars are keenly interested in your welfare and that we are in each other's business anyhow.

Joe

Comments: I guess the site is running again, so I'll say hey to all my fellow Red Devils and especially those of the second platoon, 69-70. Tom Littrell [Jelly Belly to the rest of you]- it's good to hear from you and nice to know that Lt. Livingood came through for you !!!!
I'll try to make the reunion, especially since the armor trained guys act like our Purple Hearts and other medals, and dealing with landmines, etc, don't seem to mean as much as what theirs do. I'll put our record of accomplishment ,in spite of the conditions ,up against any of them. I never noticed a round getting close and then missing because it was meant for one of them . I'm proud to wear the patch, but a lot of those guys act like they have more right to it than we do. Maybe I'm wrong, but it sure doesn't seem like it.

Here’s the news that we have been waiting for.

Everything has been completed for our 919th Engineer 2007 reunion in Springfield, MO for June 19-21, 2007.

Please hold onto this letter as it contains information you will need.

We will be staying at the Lamplighter North, 2820 N. Glenstone which is one block off Interstate 44 on Glenstone.  I have 60 rooms reserved for our group at a rate of $54 per night (up to 4 people per room).  These prices are good 3 days before and after the reunion.  This price  also includes a full breakfast buffet in their dining room.  Additional rooms will be reserved, if warranted.  Reservations can be made any time by calling1-800-707-0326.  Be sure to tell the reservation clerk that you are part of the 919th Reunion Group so we will be given credit.  When they give you the reservation number, please be sure that you contact me by email: perepsher@sbcglobal.net, phone: (918) 650-5073 or (918) 650-0967 (after 8:30 PM central time or by letter).  Be sure to let me know the dates of your reservation.  If you want to make a vacation of this trip to take in the Branson attractions, it is recommended you come the weekend before or  stay  the weekend after the reunion.  Please make your reservation as soon as possible , the cut-off date is March 15, 2007.

Our schedule of events is as follows:

June 21, 2006:  Visitation and sight seeing all day until 6 PM. when the busses will leave for the Branson Belle dinner cruise.  There will be live entertainment on board and the cost of this will be $50.00  per person.  The bus transportation will be $15 per person round trip.  Payment for the Branson Bell Dinner Cruise and transportaion  should be mailed to me either in the form of a check or money order as soon as possible.  Our Memorial Service this time will be held in Branson   prior to our boarding the Branson Belle for our dinner cruise.  All payments should be made out to Paul Repsher, not to 919th Engineer Company as it makes it difficult to cash checks made out to the unit instead of to me.

Make a list of those former members you feel will be interested, send it to me,  and   will contact them again to get a reply.

Help will be needed to take care of the hospitality room, hold the memorial service at Branson, sell memorabilia, help with registration, cook the steaks and set up for the tailgate party.

If there is anyone interested in taking over the reunions etc, please let me know.

Friends and family are most welcome to attend, the more the merrier.

Anyone wishing to contact me can do so by calling: (918) 650-5073 or (918) 650-0967 after 8 PM CST, emailing me at: perepsher@sbcglobal.net or send me a note in the mail.

For those that I have an email address for will receive duplicate notification.  I’m just trying to make sure the word gets out.

Send me a list of those you may feel I do not have on my list.  If possible include name, address, phone number, spouse’s first name, year(s) served in the 919th,  and email address.

Should any questions remained unanswered in this letter, feel free to contact me.

He got that from putting a band aid on a little boy in Nam. I know I keep posting this but I and also hoping that someone else may contact me. I have heard from 3 people over the years, but I also hope that there is more that is willing to talk. It does not have to be about him. Every little bit helps. It helps to fill a void sometimes.

Comments: Howdy Red Devils,
Fred Sheetz and Connie Wayne Padgett have been plenty busy at the arts and crafts shops and to hear them tell it, they have found somebody to make the hats with "Lil Dusty" the Red Devil with high quality and at a fair price.

I'm not trying to sell anything here, but I think if you ask them, maybe they can order some extras.  Their price goes down if they order 144 of them.  I'd suggest letting them know how many you'd want if they showed up at the Branson, Missouri 919th Reunion.

Comments: Fred Sheetz talked with the current First Sergeant at the 58th Engineers.  According to Fred, Elmo has moved the 919th reactivation date to 21Jun06, and that is iffy.  Fred was left with the idea that this isn't going to be a big brass band ceremony, but a quick ceremony after PT.  And that it might not happen at all.  This is not encouraging, Fred will be updating us Mondays after his weekly contacts with Elmo Leichenauer.

Any one else notice we aren't mentioned on the calendar, besides me. That was the night we lost Spec. 4 Charles Case when they dropped sachel charge in his lap and wounded SSG Gatewood. Hey Red Devils,

Got back from Colorado Springs yesterday and it was a hoot.  Roomed with Fred.  Ben Fields brought his herd, Rick O'Dell arrived with Dale, Floren now has my Red Devils's hat, and there were a bunch of others that don't normally make the 919th reunions.  But Bill Moore, Frank Gowrie and so many others were present, along with Larry Chavez, Bustos, Ski, Steve and Ann Wright and Gary Cox.  My apologies to those I've overlooked, toss a message in here and let me know <grin>.

It does my heart good to see all these era Engineers, from 1966 through the bitter end in 1971 or there abouts and hearing all the stories.

We need to get another bunch together for the welcome back ceremony around abouts April of next year for the two squadrons for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Fred, Rick, Sambo, Connie, Fred and myself will probably get rooms at FitzGeralds in downtown Las Vegas and hoof it back to the modern part of the strip.

The 58th Engineers came back from their tour with the 10th Mountain Division when we were having our get-together in West Virginia.  Believe me, had I known, I would have been there in a New York minute.  Major Emond (CO of the 58th in Iraq) gave a small speech, showed a couple of videos from the current CO of the Blackhorse, COL Bayer, and he and answered a few questions.

Maybe we can all attend, just a onetime gathering of all engineers from all eras that sport the armored and tracked disciplines.

Living large in Santa Clara,

Joe

Hello Red Devils, I was a Lieutenant Platoon Leader of Second Platoon and XO, 919th Engineer Company (Armored), July 67-July68. Just found this site and would love to correspond with any who served during this time. What I remember most is how young we all were. Another thing I remember is being a 20 yr old 2nd Lieutenant and relying on my Platoon Sgt. Sgt Moulton and my Squad Leaders. I also listened to anyone who had more time in country than me. I'm honored to say that for a period of time Sgt Strahin was Tank Commander of my tank (Bad News II). Bad News II was finally destroyed after hitting 23 mines, outside Ton Le Chon on the Cambodia border during TET 68. It finally took a 500# command detonated mine to do her in. I've been to the Vietnam Veterans memorial and have paid my respects to Sgt Strahin and all others whose names adorn this monument. Thanks, I hope to here from all who served. Dave Day

Capt. Reilly, it's great to know you are still around. You are right about the antics we pulled,it certainly helped us all get through some pretty tough times. I don't know if you remember me or not but I drove the 3rd platoon tank. Nickname "crute". Wondering if you remember the night I had a little to much to drink and borrowed the jeep from the orderly room at Blackhorse in Xuan Loc and was unable to return it. If I remember correctly I lost a rank over that. The crazy things we do as kids!

Best to all old Armored Engineers on Memorial Day, I was CO of the 919th July 68 to June 69, lots of fond memories of comraderie, some tight spots, bravery, foolishness, fun. Special appreciation this day for the 5 we lost in my year, especially for their buddies and families. My son just spent a year in Iraq with the 10th Mountain, I worried about him every day, every minute, he is home safe now, but his unit to Afghanistan next Feb, so back to the worry beads. Hope all are in good health and sprits, we share special memories from a special unit. The antics on M*A*S*H did not hold a candle to ours.

Hello - to all the 919th Engineer Company (Armor),11th Cavalry Black Horse!! I served in 67-68, at Xuan Loc. I drove for Capt.Crocket, and also drove the APC, which was hit by a claymore mine on July 15,1967. I was the only survivor on the track. It was badly damaged, but I drove it back to the base late that night with Lt.Day. I also drove for Capt.Sharret. I have been trying to find my buddies, or anyone who was in my squad. Some of the guy's I've been looking for are: Charles Clement, Ron King, Lt.Day, Ryburn, Cone, and Jim Neeley. If anyone remembers me, or knows how to reach anyone, please get in touch. It would be great to hear something back. PS- Don't be mis-led by the e-mail name. This is my wife's doing!! Also, I just stumbled on this site, and I think it's great. God Bless.

Henry Jones: The 919th reunion is June 21st to the 23rd. It is going to be held in Berkeley Springs WV. The two hotels that we will be using are the Best Western (866) 945-9400 or the Cacapon Lodge 1-800-call wva and ask for the Cacapon Lodge. Tell them you will be with the 919th reunion in order to get the group rate. A trip to DC is planned also. All info can be gotten from Paul perepshe@msn.com as he is the person putting it all together.

X-sgt.Wes looking for a 919th man nicname Teddy Bear. He would remember me by the way he had me spooked when I was blowing up an ammo dump that the other side had left behind. Like asking me what would happen if the time delay fuse would burn too fast. I keep telling him to stop talking about it because he was making me worry to much. In the end I added too much fuse and then yelled fire in the hole. We could have had lunch by the time it blew because of his help. When I got home you wrote me and told me you were getting married and come out to CO. but I lost touch with you and would like to hear from you again. Was Sgt. Wes Brown with the HHT. REGT. SCOUTS. Never knew where we were but will always remember Teddy Bear! from the 919th. Also guarded rome plows for new NDP's. 100% disable now so have lots of time on my hands to talk to others that I had forgotten Name's.

Hello Red Devils. I am the Rear Detachment Commander for the 58th CEC. While the unit fights in Iraq, I remain at Fort Irwin to take care of everyone and everything that stays behind. The unit is doing very well, approaching its ninth month in Iraq with an eye towards coming home. I thought some of you might like more news about SGT Mendoza. He is improving everyday, getting stronger and pushing himself further in physical therapy. He receives his right prosthetic leg this week, and will begin re-learning to stand and walk with both legs next week. I recommend our web site which has much more information about the deployment. Go to www.tfblackhorse.org and click on "Red Devils." If I can help anyone in anyway, please contact me at 760-380-3556 or by email at the address above. Allons and Will Do! CPT Alec Barker

Engineers, Connie Wayne Padgett called and said he and Allen Hathaway had finished his labors, gathering the names and related data of all the 919th Engineers who were killed in Vietnam. Apparently, the 919th casualties were reported under a "provisional squadron" and it took some effort to identify them from other units. I believe he said the number was 29 for the whole time the 919th was there. That is alot Engineers, but I counted nine, maybe ten that died while I was there (Nov 68/69). We kicked around some ideas, maybe gathering pictures of these Engineers (We use that term loosely, there were 11b's and many other MOS's in the mix), posting the list some where here on the website, stuff like that. Another item SSGT Padgett mentioned that needed getting done is getting all the unit citations documented and identified. Fred Sheetz has some of the ThunderRuns and they mention alot of Predidential Unit Citations that were not previously listed. Doug Giesege asked for this in a previous message and maybe we can look over our DD214's and other military records and get the record up to date. I'm thinking maybe I can hornswoggle SSGT PAdgett into this task as well. Joe

Does anyone out there know how to find out how many kia's, mia's, wia's the 919th sustained during our time in Nam? Or for that matter, how many medals our units' members earned during that time period? I remember that the first thing that greeted my eyes as I entered the Orderly Room the first time was a sign welcoming me to "the most decorated combat engineer unit in the U.S. Army"; I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of that declaration, but I am curious as to the actual numbers associated with a statement like that. Any ideas? Peace brothers, Doug [Alphie} Giesige P.S. hey Tom Littrell, ya big lug, how ya doin' ?

This is a followup email to the other emails regarding Sgt. Mendoza: I don't know when I've felt so proud. To be at The Wall with some of the 11th Cav guys for the wreath placement (without a wereath, but I was promosed that it will never happen again) and also to go to Walter Reed to see a fellow trooper wounded in Iraq -- all in the same day. Sgt. Mendoza was in good spirits and very humble. He is proud and has no regrets. I told him it took me and a lot of others many years to feel that way. I also told him he had better looking nurses and nurses aides than I did when I was at WR 34 years ago. So he is in good hands and receiving the best care to be had. He has a long road ahead of him, many more months of getting better. I told him to keep a journal and to stay in touch with everyone he could. Don't wait 30 years trying to find guys like a lot of us. The only address that I have is where his mom is staying at WR: Sgt. Mendoza c/o Marth Valencia Mologne House Hotel 6900 Georgia Ave., NW Building 20 Washington, D.C. 20307-5001 There is a computer in the family waiting room but I'm not sure if he can get to it yet. I think the all volunteer Army has a lot to do with the way he feels -- so proud. I have invited him to come to the 919th Engr. Reunion next June in West Virginia and also the 11th Cav Reunion in August in Colorado if he is able to travel by then. Please forward this to any others that I've not listed. Thanks,FRED

Wow, what a site! I served with the 919th from March '69 to October '70. I was one of those dozer operators that went everywhere that an NDP or fire support base had to be set up. I traveled with every company and/or troop that the regiment had. For a 19 year old guy, what an honor to be surrounded by such heroic troops. I don't know how they made helmets large enough to fit our heads(ego)! One of the greatest things that has happened to me in life has been that I served with the 11th ACR. Keep up the good work! I would love to hear from anyone associated with this great unit!

Hi Everyone! Just realized the 919th had a website. I served in Vietnam from July68-July69. I was on Strahns tank as a rear deck gunner, then loader. My nickname was Ski. I recognized a few names in the guest book and thought I'd hop on board. Many fond memories during my year, some not so fond, but I'm glad I served. Anyway, I'm alive and doing fine. Anybody with any questions feel free to drop me a line.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sept. 2, 2004 RELEASE 20040902-02 58th Engineers Bridge Brigade Gap By Pfc. Matthew McLaughlin 10th Mnt. Div. Public Affairs CAMP VICTORY, Baghdad, Iraq— Soldiers from the 58th Combat Engineer Company from Fort Irwin, Calif., are supporting numerous battalions in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Commandos), 10th Mountain Division. The engineers provide vital assets to the Commandos, said Col. Mark Milley, 2 BCT commander. “The 58th Engineers provide us tactical mobility as well as being fully trained in infantry tasks,” he said. Platoons from the 58th Engineers are divided amongst infantry battalions in the BCT to provide them engineer support, said 1st Sgt. Elmo Leichenauer 58th ENG first sergeant. “We are a regimental asset,” he said. “We re-organized to provide engineer capabilities to the battalions.” First platoon is working with 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, ensuring bridges and roads are capable of carrying the mechanized infantry’s tanks and equipment. “One bridge may be able to carry a donkey cart and the other may carry an M-1 Abrams Tank,” said 2nd Lt. Patrick Armstrong, 58th ENG operations officer. “We’ll make sure a bridge or road meets the military load class and can carry a tank across it,” Soldiers from 2nd Platoon are working with 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, providing similar engineer support and ensuring the security of Iraqi bridges. During the Iraqi National Conference, 2nd Platoon Soldiers secured important bridges, ensuring the event was not overshadowed by insurgent attacks, Leichenauer said. The Assault and Obstacle Platoon are currently providing security at Camp Victory North. They are also conducting maintenance on the engineers’ vehicles and other combat tasks, said Sgt. Keshone Peyton, 58th ENG. “Soldiers are doing lots of gate guard, watching bridges, patrols, lots of cool stuff,” Peyton said. “They are things we all want to do.” All platoons are ready to provide infantry units with their expertise, Armstrong said. “We do a lot of route reconnaissance, route clearing, making sure the roads are clear of [improvised explosive devices],” he said. “Our M-113 Armored Personnel Carriers also provide armored capabilities to infantry units.” Peyton said the engineers are eager to conduct operations in support of 2nd BCT. “Everyone wants to go out and patrol,” he said. “We just have to pay attention and stay safe at all times.” The combat operations are a welcome change of pace from months of training and preparation for operations, Leichenauer said. “They’re glad to be working again,” he said. “We were doing classes in camp for a long time. Now that they’re out there doing patrols, they’re pretty excited.” Spc. Harold Hoffman, 58th ENG, said his unit is well-suited for combat operations with infantry units. They provide engineer capabilities as well as an infantry mentality. “Everyone’s first [job] is infantry,” he said. “We’re engineers secondly, Soldiers first.” -30- Cutlines: Bridge JPG: A Solider from the 58th Combat Engineer Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, observes a destroyed bridge Aug. 13. To all Red Devils and Black Horse Troopers. How long ago did you serve in Vietnam, how old were you?, were you married with children?, or were you single. How many years have been stolen from you and your family because of your service to your country? What has it been 32, 36 years, how long have you suffered and our family? For those of us that have recognized that we have PTSD how can we get back the past? The money that the VA gives you if you are lucky is nothing compared to the time we have lost if we had been better husbands and fathers. Do want to do something about it? Do you want to help all those kids that are fighting now?, so they will have a chance to lead a better life than the one we have be living? Do any of you know if there is anything in place for them now? Our government has played a bean counters game with us hoping that we die off soon so they do not have to pay the price for the neglect they have shown to us, but there is another generation fighting now that the same thing will happen too, it has to be better for them than for us.

I served with the 919th.combat eng.co.from july 66 untill july 67. I was on atank. the thing missing on the tank in the photos is they had dozer blades mounted on the front. We cleared trails through the jungle for the main body. There were two tanks in the co. Dewayne Jones tank gunner.

I am trying to locate any one that can remember a Francis Cabral, he served in 919 from June 69 thru July 70. I am trying to help him prove his PTSD claim but we cannot not locate any stressors the VA wants because he according to the wizards was not a combat mos. Now I am not sure when a 12B was your stay at home housewife, but anywayanyone that can help woth the stressors of that time frame it will be greatly appreciated.

Fellow Red Devil’s, As we all get older and the infirmaries of age challenge us almost daily we fight a new old enemy. Our tour of duty in Vietnam. Those of us that served their young where forever imprinted with behavioral patterns that have stuck with us over 30 years. When the time comes when we become desperate and are able to reach out for help. Those close to us if we have any, feel a sense of relief that finally you see it too. What do you feel. Are you really HAPPY with your life, Well then God Bless You, You are one of the very few and you need to reach out to those Brothers in Arms that are not. There are those of us that are suffering with severe PTSD that don’t know we have it. They just think that this is the way( I am supposed to feel ), We been feeling that way so long that we think its normal. The job of Combat Engineer in the 919th was unique and very very stressful. Mine sweeps daily came with the threat of ambush or missing a mine. And sometimes it did happen. A job that seemed like it as like its was routine, like securing a gravel pit while dump truck were being loaded could turn into a day of terror. How many of us are suffering with PTSD and are not being treated? How many fire fights or life threatening experiences did the average Grunt go through in his tour of duty? How can we help the members of 919th that are suffering and not gotten help yet. Do you know someone? We had a very difficult job in the 11th ACR and now I feel we have another , finding those among us that need help and have not found away to obtain it.

I was wondering if there might be a chance if any reunions will be back down in Fort Knox? I reside in Kentucky now, but I don't have the income to travel to other places were all the reunions seem to be. I am also interested still to here from any 919th Engineers that might remember father. His name was Terrence Wayne Weldon ( DOC ) was his nickname.

Hello fellow (19th Engrs, I served with the 919th Engrs from 1966 to 1967. I also served one year at Long Binh Army Depot. And one year with the Aviation Material Maintenance Center (AMMC)in Sagion. Because of my disability I do not attend any reunions,I am a lifetime member of the 11th ACR.It took me a long time to stop the dreams of years long ago. I'm married to the same girl for over 20 years, she is God's blessing for me.She held me during the rough times, and the good times. I left Vietnam on Aug 26,1971. There is not a day goes by without a thought of them days 33 years ago. We were all very young guys just wanting to defend our beloved USA. I've been to a few V.A. hospitals and was treated very good, with respect. I live in Tampa Bay Florida. Good luck to all the guys that served in Nam. Respectfully, Leo R Krum Jr SSG

Hello fellow 919th combat engineers.I served with the 919th from Aug 1966 to July 1967 at Xuan Loc. I also served one year at Long Binh Army depot. And one year at AMMC in Sagion. But it was the 919th Engineers that i met a lot of good men (boys). We went on a lot of missions, were in some big operations.I can close my eyes and smell the nucmum. I'm pretty messed up phyicially, and thats why I can't go to the 11th ACR and the 919th Engrs reunions. There is not a day goes by that I don't remember something or someone from the 11th ARC or 919th engrs. I've been married to the same girl for over 20 years,I give her a lot of credit for standing by me all these years. At times I made life a living hell for her.The War cost me my Daughter.well I think I said enough for now. Good luck to all the men I served with. Respectfully, Leo R Krum Jr... :)

Roger is going to try to get to Daytona if his time will work out.We also talked of a mini reunion in North Carolina with good rates and golf tours just something to throw out to the rest of you guys.I am looking foward to Daytona.See you guys Connie

Hey you Third Platoon Guys, Have any of you established communication with Albert Milone? I called a number I have and got his Mother and gave her my telephone number and email address last week and haven't heard anything. If I don't hear anything in another week or so, I'll send a post card or something to follow up. I'm told he and Maggi both were from New York. Thanks, Joe

I enjoyed reading some of the stories and comments. It was good to hear that we all share memories and most of us dont remember names too well. I served with 3rd Platoon(I think) attached to 2nd Squadron 11th ACR. I was there from 1/1968 - 1/1969. I drove the platoon leaders track. I had a bullseye painted on the side until they had me take it off. I do have some pictures I could share if there is anyone i served with. One of the guys I served with was Dirk. He was a bartender from Topeka Ks. I was from Billings MT. would like to hear from any of those that served with me. Great web site!

I was SP5 Leon Dungey. I was on slope 30...the 1st to open fire on the Viet Cong on the 19th of June 1967. The time was one O'clock in the morning. I had just taken my position on the personnel carrier with the 50 caliber. At that time I heard a noise and I looked forward and saw 3 Viet Cong in front of me. I quickly killed them with the 50cal. At that time the rest of the squadron opened fire. My personnel carrier was destroyed and I was critically wounded and sent back to the United States. I rec'd a Bronze Star with a V for this action. I would like to hear from any of you who were with me that morning. My phone number is (269) 324-2471.

Dear George, Thanks for checking in. I think everybody shares your esteem of Sgt Strahin, although, way back when, I thought you were just out to exclusively bust my hump over the job de jour. I see now that you are a fine guy, have you planned on attending any of the Blackhorse reunions or the 919th reunion in WV? Joe Rooney PS: I got first dibs on him guys! Take a number<grin>.

I was brousing through the comments in the Red Devil's Guest Book and came across a number of references to the gallantry of SSG Arthur Strahin on April 29, 1969. Strahin was the tank commander of a M-48A3 in the 1st Platoon of the 919th Combat Engineer Company. I knew him very well. I am George Greene, and I was the Platoon Leader of the 1st Platoon when Strahin was killed. If you were in the 1st Platoon, you may remember me by the nickname given to me by the men and painted on my CVC helmet, "Mad Dog." Nothing was more important to me than my men, and I think about many of you every day. A number of the 1st Platoon were wounded in the battle that day, myself included, as we fought off a vicious ambush from a large VC/NVA force protecting a jungle base camp. It seemed like we were in heavy combat almost every day at that time, and we relied on Strahin and his crew to blast the way clear for us all the time. I still recall the terrified looks on the faces of the enemy when they came face to face with the dragon's mouth painted on the front slope of Strahin's tank. The fighting was fierce that day and the 1st Platoon was right in the middle of it. As I recall, the line of tanks from M Company under Cpt. Firestone broke formation under heavy RPG fire and Strahin ordered his tank to fill the gap in the line so the VC/NVA could not break through. The jungle was on fire and I was distracted because we were engaging a strong enemy force on our right flank that was trying to get behind our lines. Strahin's tank was hit a number of times and I believe his entire crew was wounded. I recall he carried one of his crew to a dust-off chopper, then returned to his tank, climbed back up and resumed the fight. I didn't see the fire that killed him, so it is not possible for me to write it up completely. This is where I will need your help. Your messages about SSG Strahin's actions that day brought back vivid memories to me about the battle, and your comments that maybe he should have been considered for the Congressional Medal of Honor have motivated me to investigate the events of that day further in order to make that determination. You may be interested to know that I have in my possession, hanging in my bedroom still to this day, the dog tags that Strahin was wearing the day that he was killed in action. I am asking all of you who may have direct or indirect knowledge of the events surrounding the battle that day, no matter how detailed or trivial, to write them down and email them to me: what you did, what someone else did, were you at the battle, what track were you on, did you see Strahin and his crew, do you know someone who was there, do you know someone with a story to tell, do you know the coordinates, province, operation, other units. If you know someone that was there, email his name, phone number or email address, and I'll send him this message personally. This all brings back memories for me, some good and some not so good. Strahin was a legend in the 11th Armored Cavalry, and I can say that his death left a lasting mark on me. For the rest of my tour of duty until I returned home, I recall a hatred and vengenance swelled up in me that sometimes was frightening even to my men. Maybe this effort will help a little. If anyone knows how to get in contact with SFC Pearl, the 1st Platoon Sergeant, please let me know. George Greene, 1st Platoon, 919th Engineers, 11th Armored Cavalary Regiment, 1968-1969

Hi all. Just found the site by searching for 919th. I was one of the cooks at Blackhorse from 7/68 until about 10/69 or so when the base was moving out. I read the comments and vaguely remember a name or two. I don't know if anyone remembers me. I worked with Roger Hollingsworth, Chuck D. Hum, Walter Lober, Ed Mahi, James Kamaka, Charles Boles, Sgt. Driggs, Sgt. Marion Archer, Benny Lockridge, Wm James, Tony Rodriguez. Thanks to the person(s) who put up this site. Can't find too much about the 919th - VERY PROUD TO HAVE SERVED WITH SUCH A GREAT OUTFIT!

Hi Red Devils, I just talked with Jimbo Neeley of the Third Platoon, he had to make the trip back to the states from OZ. He's back in Queensland now, regretfully, his father died the day of his arrival in Seattle. But, he has adopted this nifty accent. (It can't be for real, even after all these years!) Roger Cross is laid up in bed as well, some kind of cold, what is happening to the Third Platoon? Get better from the rest of us. Joe

To All that where there on May 12, 1969 Quan-Loi, here is a story that one of my daughters wrote from a interview that she did with me about may experiences in the Army. She did this for her high school senior english final. This is still a work in progress so if any one has any thing they would like to share about that night it would help. Vietnam Revisited Tonight it is blue black outside; I can see the outline of the road and the yellow double line running down the middle. Walking in the dark isn’t frightening. It’s comforting, with the stars twinkling in time with the crickets. My father is at my side, keeping me company with the steady beat of his long strides. A car passes. We shy off the road to give it room, stopping for a moment to readjust to the darkness after the blinding headlights. Our night vision returns; we begin to walk. I stumble; it’s hard to walk straight when you can barely see. “Take my hand mi hija.” His voice is deep with the faintest hint of the barrios of L.A. We rarely hold hands. His is large, thickly callused and warm, mine fits neatly inside. With this extra protection the sky seems to sing louder and the moist air kisses my skin. We venture farther into the heart of Hawaii’s Volcano National Park. “How much longer?” we wonder. The lush trees tower overhead listening to our conversation. Silence falls between us, but it does not matter. The thick night air does not invite conversation. Times stretches with satisfying ease. “This reminds me of Vietnam.” he says. Suddenly the night takes on new dimensions, deeper shadows. He stops and shows me how the American GIs would walk through the jungle to keep quiet. Heel toe, heel toe. I try and it feels awkward. “Only it was different; there were men hiding, waiting to kill us.” And you them. I thought to myself. At that moment I knew more poignantly and personally than ever before how a young boy of eighteen must have felt. The night which had previously held dark delicacies now whispered of choked fears , weapons, and death. Stuttering memories come to me, retold until they seem like lore, but they are not lore. It was my father’s life and it did happen. Images pass through the heavy air like electricity through water, stealing my breath. “I will tell your story,” I think to myself. I feel like crying. Vietnam veterans have never gotten proper respect or recognition. Politically, I can understand, but the notion still rolls me in sadness. May 12th 1969, The night of my father’s first fire fight, at age eighteen, he was playing cards when the base was attacked. He and all of his platoon went to the bunker to wait for instructions. There was an almost intoxicating sense of fear and anticipation; if it were a drug it would be a very dangerous one. A soldier checked in to assure them that they wouldn’t be needed, because they hadn’t been in country for very long. “We won’t come and get you guys unless its absolutely necessary.” They were all relieved at the news, but it was kind of a harsh letdown. A feeling of helplessness lingered. Men were dying out there while they did nothing. Worse yet, they were glad that they weren’t needed. The frightening sounds of explosions and sirens swirled around them in a chaotic symphony. Silence. That was bad; silence is always bad. The same soldier came into the bunker; his ghostly white face could be seen in the total darkness of the night. “We need you guys to plug a hole in the perimeter. The North Vietnamese Regulars have attacked.” He walked out on shaky legs. They climbed into their ACAV's, armored personnel carriers mounted with heavy machine guns. They were nicknamed “aluminum coffins” because of their light armor. My father was the right gunner. As they went down to the perimeter, the smells of burning diesel and tropical vegetation clashed in the dark. As an illumination flare went off, the ACAV tilted and my father fell against Bob. Bob Owens was a huge black man, and at twenty-seven, the oldest recruit in the platoon. He was the big brother of the group and he was crying, weeping really. He was muttering under his breath, “ Those sons of bitches, those sons of bitches.” “What, man, what?” my father asked. “Look!” The flare was just beginning to fizzle out, but the American GI could be seen plainly enough. He was crawling with his entrails dragging behind him, his legs most likely gone. My father went to his side of the ACAV, adrenaline rushing though his veins. “I’m going to die. I’m going to die,” he thought . His heart started to beat so hard that it hurt. He tried to stay alert, but all he could hear was his heart. Finally, a pounding in the back of the ACAV signaled that they should unload. My father had his machine gun and ammo with him. He was instructed to hold his position by a bunker with corpses lying in it. The smell of explosives, dirt, and burning human flesh is one that he would never forget. Dad laid down at the top of the ridge, thinking, “This will be the last night I will ever see.” He waited. A flare went off in the tree line about 400 hundred meters from where he lay. He could see people running out there with what looked like flares or sparklers. “What the heck is going on here,” he thought? As he strained to see, my father heard buzzing around his head like bees, only there was heat, too, like someone had taken a hot knife and brushed it by his cheek. That was when Dad realized that he was being shot at; he was looking down the barrel of an AK-47. Fear choked my father; a feeling of inevitability flooded his senses. There was no escape. He began to shoot his machine gun. The lights started to go off in the dark. As he was shooting, the weapon jammed. In basic training, they teach you to recock the gun and get the jammed bullet out of the chamber. This jam was bad, much worse than anything they had ever taught in training. Dad began to take the gun apart in the dark. He found that a round had ruptured and splintered. It had gotten into one of the mechanisms in the bolt, which fires the gun. All the while, the lights where coming closer. My father took apart the bolt, found the problem and fixed it. As he started to put it back together, a pin slipped out of his fingers and onto the ground. In the pitch dark, my father franticly searched for the pin, but his fingers felt huge and wouldn’t cooperate. He couldn’t feel anything. All the while, his heart was beating in his ears. Suffocating panic set in. Ka thump, ka thump. He heard a voice, “You’d better get up and run. You’re gonna die here.” But he knew that if he got up he would silhouette himself against the ridge top. Ka thump, ka thump. Sweat dripped from his brow, yet he felt cold. That was the first time that he ever prayed. It was clumsy, but fervent. “Jesus, if you get me out of this right now, I’ll do whatever you want with my life. Oh, please God.” Suddenly, the pin seemed to leap into his hands as if a magnet was attached to his fingertips. My father put the gun back together and continued to shoot. He was able to hold the men back at the bottom of the gully. As daylight came, he heard Bob behind him asking if he needed more ammunition. My dad looked and saw that he had seventy-five rounds left. “Yeah, I need some more,” As Bob came up behind my father, he actually crawled on top of him. “ Hey man, what are you doing?” my dad asked. “Man, don’t move. There’re satchel charges all around you.” Little bags filled with plastic explosives had been thrown at him during the firefight. Not one had gone off. My father never felt fear in combat again. He knew that, with Heavenly Father’s help, he would make it through Vietnam.

Delighted to find this web site. I was with the 919th engineers 11/69-10/70. I also went back to Nam at the end of 1995 and toured all the areas we served in including Quan Loi, Xian, Bien Hoa, An Loc, Iron Triangle, Cu Chi, etc. Spent two weeks crawling tunnels, visiting countryside, museums and then visited Hanoi. Filmed the return trip and then and used it to teach a one day class on Vietnam at our local high school for a number of years. Worthwhile endeavor.

Hey what happened to the last two months of information? I know Joe Rooney sent some pictures I had into our photo gallery, but tonight when I was on line they were gone! I just got the new issue of Thunder Run and I noticed that there were some names missing in the KIA lists along with a few errors in assignments. SP4 Charles Case was listed unknown and there was no name for SSG George Cannon third platoon or SSG Strand/ Stroud from 1st platoon I am not to sure on the spelling of his name but i remember he was killed in May of '69. There was even talk he should have recieved the MOH for his actions. Anyone interested in the actual events of May 12th '69 write me I was there with SP4 Case, PFC Venturini, SSg Gatewood, SP4 Huber, SFC Bradley and myself 41 track!!!

found some great pictures someone may be interested in book called "NAM a Photographic History" isbn # 1-58663-083-0 // Metrobooks is publisher --purchased @Barnes & Noble bookstore // page 309 -beautiful picture of M-48 tank belonging to 1st platoon --919th -- with name on barrel "Wild One 4" other mentions in book page 424 picture of 10 M-48's ready to roll into the Fishook in spring of 70' -- and mention of the 11th ACR on page 428 involved in the invasion of Cambodia - I'm sure there is more relevant information but I was excited to see a picture specifically from the 919th. I ran heavy equipment 10-68 to 6-69 with the 919th. Have a great holiday

Just wanted to wish my brothers a Happy New Year. Still trying to locate friends from long ago. Hey, David Phillips, Tony Venturini, Wayne Huber, Bruce Riechow where the he__ are you guys. I'm still in California. Married for the third time getting into more and more trouble and way to deep in debt. I found Bernie with a number I was given, he's still in Chicago. I would like to talk via phone or e-mail with any and all who want to. My number is 209-862-2206 anytime in the evenings or on week-ends. I'm still working for "Uncle Sam" at a National Cemetery and am seeing a lot of brothers from our war being placed to rest! I need to hear from you guys. I got an e-mail from a medic who served in Quon Loi back in May of '69. Best to all my brothers "RED DEVILS" forever and proud to be a member of the 11th ACR.

In two weeks I will be moving over to the Regimental Engineer Section of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. I was 1st Platoon Leader from Nov '00 to Feb '02 with the 58th Combat Engineer Company. The 58th CEC is the current engineer company supporting the Blackhorse, but it is still the "Red Devils." I would like to say thank you to our the prior Red Devils who did their part defending this great country. I had the privelage of meeting some of you at the Regiments 100th Aniversary in Las Vegas. It did a lot of our soldiers good to hear stories and experiences from the veterans. I would also like to let you all know that the 11th ACR and the Red Devils are still going strong. The Regiment continues its border mission as the OPFOR at the National Training Center. We are currently going through some doctrine changes in how the OPFOR fights. But the engineer work continues- actually it has increased. Throughout the Regiment, the engineers are considered the hardest working, most proficient unit. Every rotation they recieve some kind of special recognition for the work they have done. They lay 3,500-5,000 mines a battle, put in a 6 km trenchline complete with fighting positions for the Millenium Challenge, train a reserve or NG engineer company and three Infantry companies on engineer mobility and countermobility every month, the Engineer Recon Patrol is recognized as some of the best scouts on the battlefield. Allons! Red Devils!

As I recollect, the After Action Reports were processed immediately by the operations clerk for use at regimental Tactical Operations Center and perhaps were what I would call uncorrected raw data. I believe regimental AAR's were compiled from reporting units. I might be wrong on who gives what to whom, but for stubborn accuracy, the dreadful job of reporting all personnel changes on the morning reports fell to us Company Clerks. I can tell you entries for casualties required either the Platoon Leader's written report or the Platoon Sergeant's. Responsibility moved up to the CO or Top if they were not available. Hi Doug, After action reports didn't go through the Company Clerk's perview while I was there, I believe the Operations Clerk may have had a hand in the reports that kind of hastily pasted together for the immediate war needs. Casualties were entered in the daily Morning Report as official reports of killed and wounded arrived with the "date of" the action, I think, entered in parenthesis. I recall there being sometimes a period of a week between officially making Morning Report entries and the official notification. And I had to type of letters of condolence and get them signed by the Commanding Officer quickly and forward them to the regiment for disposition. At times, there would be spelling disagreements or in one case, somebody in the CONUS sent the letter back because the typewriter used had a bent letter P. Ijust wanted to say hey to my fellow 919thers.I also was wondering if anyone else had been reading the after action reports ,especially the one called "operation Fresh Start". I know my memory ainn't what it used to be,but I believe it contains more than a few errors. For instance occuring on April 8th states that the 2/919th received 2 kiaa and 4wiaa. I was in the second platoon then, and I can guarantee that did not happen to us, although I remember the 3rd or 4th platoon had a sweep team taken out by an automatic ambush. Which leads me to wonder just how reliable these reports are and how usefull are they when pursuing a claim or just wanting to check your memory. Anybody else notice? A big howdy to Tom Littrell and thanks again Tom. over and out doug {alphie } giesige

Paul M Pillow This is in reference to your message as to where abouts of David Huhn. I talked with him one time since we got back from Vietnam and I came down on orders and returned to south east asia and I lost track of him. He was from Findley Ohio. I called information and tried to locate him, but they did not have him listed in the directory. If you find him let me know. I also remember slope 30 and never will for get it. Dave, Scott and I was very close we were in the same squad. I believe that I know you, but I am not sure.

Bach was the TC, Ralph Leasure, Billy Dalton, Larry Chavez, and Mike Hester also rotated through the crew during my time there. Thanks for sharing the picutures -- I have some that need to be converted from slides, then scanned and posted.

Hi, William Fee Have you had any luck of finding any troops that was with the 919th Engineer Company during 1966 and 1967. I was there during this time frame. As you know the 3rd platoon of the 919th and the 3rd squardon of the 11th ACR was involved in a hell of a battle with the VC in the morning of 19 June 1967 and the 3rd platoon of 919th suffered about 90% of casualities. When we were returning from the field the airforce dropped a few bombs close to our route of travel and a few branches of trees missed our tracks. We were lucky. I visited the 919th troops that I could see and told them that I wished them luck and a few days later I was enroute to the U.S.A, and that was the last time I saw them. I seen Bill Pearson since then. I would also like to find out if they made it out of Vietnam safely. Lenza

I served with the 919th in 1966. I was even before the "Boat People", We flew over in a C-130. I became a tunnel rat in the First Platoon. In 1967 I left to join the LRRP, assigned to Air troop. I stayed with the LRRP through 1968. The tank on the book cover was indeed one of our's. I believe it belonged to second Platoon? ALL THE BEST

On Sept 7th, 1969 15 tanks and 3 APC's from the 919th were involved in one hell of a fire fight that also included a dust off being blown out of the sky while trying to land. I am looking for them because most of them were wounded in the first moments of the fight. I was the medic who patched them up. If this sounds familiar please contact me. I need your help in cooberating some facts...Thanks, over and out.

Hello, I served with the 919th from about 12/68 untill 3/69,I was with the 4th plt, I was at the "S-4" lumber yard the little one on the west side of the company area at "BlackHorse",then went to building the places to service the APC's I have lots of pictures of the guys and some mine sweeping training at the base, I also have a picture of the "M-48-A-1" with the teeth on it. I was a "LRRP" before coming to the 919th, I now live in Florida. Was from n.y. when drafted to duty in the ARMY. Would like to hear from some who remember. Thanks John

I remember the tank Al Hoffman wrote about. It had a gouge about 18 inches in circumfrance and 6 inches deep in the turret from being hit with a 107 rocket about two weeks before. The tank had a dozer blade on it and actually belonged to H Co. they offered us it's replacement but our LT said no because he felt they wouldn't send us enough security on minesweep if we had it. Doc Hoffman your e-mail address didn't work I tried to send you some photos of yourself and Snoopy.

Cynthia I am not a member of the 919th Engr. Assoc., didn't know there was one, however I am interested in becoming a member. I served with the 4th platoon from Nov. 68 to Dec. 69. I am very interested in finding some of the guys I served with such as David Phillips from St. Louis, Bernard Sopczack from Chicago, Wayne Huber and Anthony (Tony) Venturini from New Jersey, Juan Guardiola from Texas, Bruce Reicow of Sacramento and many others. I was one of six to receive medals for action seen on May 11, 1969 at Quon Loi. When I left Vietnam I ended up at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. where I spent the next two years as a drill sergeant for basic training. I got out on Sept. 10, 1971. cc: scald43@sornoratx.net ikerooney@pcmagic.net

I was a medic with the 919th engineers/attached to hq.trp, in 1969. when i got out to the field they had a Bridgetank, three acavs(with the logal blood sweat and tears) and a water purifing truck. When we made the move into cambodia, we used the bridge and when we broke a track we had to blow the tank so we could keep up and not leave anything behind for charlie.

We had a great reunion at Colo Springs. Lots of stories and laughs. Founs some great info in peoples clutter they had saved. One was a Blackhorse book telling of the 919th being the first 11th Cav unit to inflict casualties on the VC and about SSgt Strahin blowing the VC off of the hill that were mortaring base camp. Also it tells of two Silver Stars,21Bronze w/V,37Bronzefor service,10 Army Commendation,67 Purole Hearts,1 Air Medal,10 Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses with Bronze Star from 66-68. Pretty impressive for a stepchild unit. Sam

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. <a href="http://www.SeoAnalyticNews.com">Seo Plugin</a>

Joe Rooney, I left the 919th in October of ’68, so we never got to meet.
